How Windows Updates Can Affect Game Performance

Why Windows Updates Matter for Gamers

In simple words, if I explain the Windows Update, then these are basically the changes which are introduced to help out the system to adopt new things and perform more efficiently. But sometimes these updates are good for some reason and sometimes you have to avoid them. And mostly these are universal updates which are good for all the system but if we are having a low spec, all- rounder system then we avoid. To maintain our system efficiently and do not force it to perform more things simultaneously, which causes the workload and heats up the system then we should not update our system.

Otherwise the IC chips will be crashed. Windows Updates are designed to improve the system’s security, stability, and performance irrespective of the conditions. But for most of the gamers they can be a double-edged sword as I have told you before that some of the updates are for the security purpose, some are for the stability, some are for the enhancing the performance, But some updates can be harmful because of their incompatibility with the system.

While some updates optimize system processes and introduce new gaming features but others may intentionally or unintentionally affect our hardware and can affect our software as well. They unintentionally reduce system’s FPS and start causing stuttering, lagging, taking long time for loading and many other problems. As we know that the modern games heavily rely on CPUs scheduling, GPU drivers, memory usage, background services so even a small change in the computer’s operating system can be responsible for disturbing the whole gameplay and will affect the performance.

Aspect Before Update After Update Impact on FPS
CPU Usage Stable Increased background load Possible FPS drop
GPU Driver Manufacturer-optimized Generic or updated FPS variation
Disk Activity Minimal High during indexing Stutters
Background Services Limited Expanded Performance dips
Game Stability Predictable Temporary issues Inconsistent FPS

Most of the gamers have noticed an FPS drop, input lag, and screen tearing right after updating their windows especially in competitive games, AAA games, championship and battlefield games. So we must understand how windows updates impact our system how they interact with the hardware and software and should make informed decisions that we wanted to update or not depending on our system. Furthermore, in this blog, we would set the foundation for explaining the positive and negative effects of windows updates on the gamers on their gaming setups and on the other devices too.

Windows Security Updates and Their Effect on FPS

As we know that security is the only thing on which no person, even a beginner, a midiocer or an expert level gamer does not compromise, so for that reason, on a monthly basis, a windows update comes which is most probably related to the security. Security updates are good for security purposes, but most of the cases they affect FPS. Security updates are critical and sometimes they affect gaming performance so badly that we wish to switch to the previous version, but it is not possible once we have updated.

Features like real-time scanning, memory protection, exploit, mitigation, security checks continuously run in the background and cause a lot of power drain which results in lowering the FPS and the system lags, screen is teared, and we get a very bad gaming performance. Although we know that these protect the system from any malware attack or hacking and other kind of a problem, but they add latency and CPU overhead, overload on GPU during gaming sessions.

Some of the updates only enhance security checks that do not interfere in the FPS purposes, but more than 60% affect game files, longer load times, microstutters, screen tearing, and many other problems. Competitive FPS players who play Battlefield or Championship games with the help of softwares like MSI Afterburner or any other on-screen FPS showing software, they continuously notice their system’s FPS, and when they update their system, they notice a drop in FPS they wish to switch to the previous settings, but that is not possible and then they just wait for the next update.

Balancing security and performance is the main purpose of gamers. It is important, and we must understand how updates work, how they allow gamers to fine-tune settings without compromising on visual qualities as well as system security.

Performance Issues Gamers Faced After Windows Updates

  • Sudden FPS drops in previously stable games

  • Increased input lag or delayed mouse response

  • Random stuttering or frame pacing issues

  • Longer game loading times

  • Background CPU usage spikes

  • Audio desynchronization during gameplay

  • GPU driver conflicts

  • Network latency changes in online games

How Windows Feature Updates Differ from Security Updates

As we know that there are different kind of updates. Some are for the security purposes, some are for the performance purposes, some are for introducing new features, and some are for the general purposes. So, we cannot say that every update affects the FPS. But in most of the cases, we have noticed an FPS drop. Usually, the updates regarding features do not affect FPS majorly. Not all Windows updates affect the gaming purposes in the same way. Features updates introduce major system changes and security updates focus on tightening the security, protection, and stability.

Features updates usually modify the system’s operating system/ user interface, background services, and core processes, which helps us to maintain a high FPS in games. Because the system workload is decreased, it is maintained good, so we notice a shift in gaming performance. Security updates are lighter than the feature updates, but they may still affect CPU and disk usage because they use the data, consume power, and there’s more workload on the system. Beginners should maintain the features update cautiously, especially during battlefield games. They should pay attention to these features, understand how different players use different features, strategically, and get a good gameplay.

Conclusions

At last, I would say that if you are confused between updating your system windows or not, then let me give you a small checklist, depending on it, you can update your system. First of all, if your system is experiencing crashes, you are noticing a delayed gameplay, performance is compromised, then you must go for the features updates.

And if you are noticing your Gmail, your information to be auto filled on most of the websites and performance forms, then you must go for the security update. And if all your system is going good, you just want to adopt new features and use them to maintain next level gaming, then you can also go for those. But if they introduce FPS shift, FPS drop, then you should try to reverse them. Otherwise, wait for the next update.
